It Is Easy Being Green

Contrary to the song Kermit sang so famously, it is easy being green.  There are many simple things you can do to have a positive impact on the environment.  Environmentally sound behaviors start with the letter R.

We can all Reduce, Recycle, Repurpose and Reuse many everyday products.

Reduce the amount of fuel you consume by combining many errands into one efficient trip.  Check for facilities in your area that recycle paper, plastic, aluminum, and other products.  Reuse everyday items.  Clean out jars and plastic tubs and use them to store leftovers.  Many people are getting quite adept at repurposing things we are surrounded by everyday.  A builder in Taos, New Mexico is building “Earth ships.”  These homes are constructed of old tires filled with dirt.  Interior walls are made from aluminum cans or glass bottles.  You don’t need to move into a self-sustaining home.  Every little change you make impacts the environment.  It is as easy as changing a light bulb. green_2.gif

The new Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) uses far less energy and lasts  significantly longer than a standard light bulb.  Change your thermostat settings by two degrees; you will notice little change in temperature of your home, but see a difference on your power bill.

When purchasing new appliances, look for the ENERGY STAR logo.  These appliances meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set  by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.   Unplug small appliances when not in use.  These appliances absorb nearly as much energy when turned off as when in use.  Making a small change in your everyday life can make a big difference in the future of our environment.
